Bill & Kelly's Excellent Open Coast Adventure

Bill & Kelly’s Excellent Open Coast Adventure (3 Days)

Instructors: Bill Vonnegut & Kelly Marie Henry

This 3-day progression is designed for sea kayakers looking to take their coastal paddling to the next level.

On day 1, we will review foundation skills and apply these skills as we venture out into dynamic water. Your instructors will be looking for the best conditions to practice rough water maneuvering and rescues. Our exact destination will depend upon prevailing conditions. Be prepared to paddle in surf, rock gardens, and tide races!

During our afternoon debrief, participants will discuss the coastal forecast and develop a plan for following day. Throughout the weekend, we will refine strokes relevant to paddling in a coastal environment. We will review basic rescues and introduce more complex rescue and towing scenarios. Risk assessment and trip planning will be discussed and we will challenge you to think about what to do if things do not go as planned.

The goal of this course is to have FUN while growing your confidence, skills, and knowledge of open coast paddling.

WHO: This 3-day class is designed for Level 4 coastal paddlers looking to progress to Level 5 conditions. Prerequisites include experience launching and landing through surf and paddling on the open coast. Participants should be comfortable in shoulder high surf (3 feet), wind strong enough to generate whitecaps (15 knots), and moving water (3 knots of current). Progressing to Level 5 represents a slight increase in conditions and a significant increase in confidence – which is the primary goal of this course! WHERE: On day 1, we will meet in Horseshoe Cove located within Fort Baker along the Marin County waterfront. Our paddling destinations on day 2 and day 3 will be decided by working together to look at forecasts and find the place where we can have the most fun! Possibilities include Goat Rock, Dillon Beach, the Marin Headlands, Devils Slide, and Half Moon Bay.

WHEN: 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM Friday & Saturday, Sunday off the water by 2:00 leaving time for a debrief.
