For a week we will be immersed in all that Cape Flattery and the rugged Washington Coast has to offer. Surf, rocks, caves, arches, wildlife, and more await us. This Coastal Kayak Camp is focused on adventure & skills progression. We will work on your coastal kayaking skills that will allow you to navigate the coastal environment with elegance. We will also spend some time on shore looking at forecasting, reading swells, charts, and other important planning skills. We’ll get into the surf, around rocks, up close to cliffs, and take advantage of some of the amazing day trips around the area such kayaking to Point of Arches and kayaking around Cape Flattery!

This trip is appropriate for advanced beginner/intermediate level paddlers, as well as advanced paddlers!

Coastal Surf & Rocks (North Oregon Coast) 4 Day Custom Class

This class will focus on exploring the Oregon Coast while working on skills such as Surfing and Rock Gardening.

Part of paddling the Oregon Coast is being adaptable to coastal conditions. While we can get an idea of surf and wind conditions a week out, we really won’t know until a couple days prior to the class. This class will be ran at Oceanside Beach, Netarts or Cascade Head, Indian Beach or Short Sands. The exact location will be determined during the week of the class.

Class Level Intermediate to Advanced - with Surf Zone Experience in waves at least head high while sitting in your boat (3ft)

Location: North Oregon Coast

Time: Meet at 8:30am - 3:30

Transition to Coast - Southern Oregon Coast - Spot just opened

I had a cancellation, contact me with interest to sign up

This course was designed based on feedback from paddlers wanting to make the transition from paddling inland rivers and bays to the open waters of the Pacific Coast. It was designed to help get you through the transition onto the coast. We will work on skills such as identifying and reading the surf zone, holding position in that zone, bracing, side surfing, surfing, launching & landing. We will focus on paddling as a team, including how to explorer the coast and give your team the skills to help out when someone is in need. Current coastal paddlers can also get a lot out of this class as each student will be have the opportunity to be individually challenged increasing and developing their skills. As part of our coastal exploration there will be the option of rock gardening through out the entire weekend, plastic boats are recommended but not required

Location: Sunset Bay Oregon & possible 1 hr drive to Port Orford one day

Camping Option: We will be camping Thursday-Sat night and driving home Sunday after the class.

Class is all day Friday, Saturday and a short day on Sunday.

Skill Level: Intermediate/Advanced Intermediate definition can be found here

Introduction to Coastal Waves and Bays - Cascade Head Oregon

The day starts on land looking at Tidal, Wind, Ocean Swell forecasts and how to incorporate them into your paddle at different locations along the coast.

We will then start a 1 mile flat water paddle toward the ocean while working on a variety of self and assisted rescues, bracing techniques and different variations of towing with and without tow ropes, continuing this at times throughout the day. Once arriving at the mouth we will work on paddling, maneuvering, landing and launching in small waves as we learn about the coastal environment.

Intro to Rock Gardening - Tillamook Bay

This class will be ran with access to small conditions in order to start getting a feeling for the strategies needed for rock gardening. And will give you a great introduction to one of the most dynamic and exciting styles of paddling. You get introduced to pour-overs (riding waves over rocks), learn how to use larger rocks for protection, work on judgment, timing and maneuvering in and around the rocks. This class will give you a great introduction to one of the most dynamic and exciting styles of paddling!

This class will take place in Tillamook Bay, unless we have a rare winter day when the outer coast is accessible with small conditions.

Navigating & Towing In Tides & Currents - Columbia River Astoria (Class Full)

Learning on paper is only the first step, in this class we will go beyond chart theory and get practical experience paddling currents

In this class we will cover, how to interpret current flow and tidal information, how to plot a ferry angle using a chart & ranging. Then apply this knowledge on the water, while learning and practicing fundamental paddling techniques in current. We will also cover and practice different towing techniques in current. Some information will be given prior to the class and refined during the class.

In this class we will incorprate planning a trip where tides and currents are involved then take a trip to work with some ocean waves

We will start the day by getting familiar with navigation charts and tide tables. Then during the trip to the ocean we will work on group dynamic and management skills along with various rescues, we will also work on towing, all in a moving water environment. Once reaching the mouth of the Bay we will work on paddling with waves in a wave size adjustable environment

You have learned the strokes in flat water, now it’s time to work them into practical application. We will head out the Golden Gate and work on maneuvers around rocks while adding ocean currents into the mix.

Introduction to Surf Zone Dynamics - Northern Oregon Coast

Ocean Condition forecasts are not accurate until the week of the class. This class is to be run in small surf, if the beach surf is to large this class will be run at Cascade Head. We will still work with the surf zone but in a different way

Negotiating the surf zone (the area where waves break on the beach) is required to surf or access many places on the coast, This class is the first step for those who want to surf and play on the coast. In this class you will learn:

How the surf zone works, how to brace in breaking waves, launching and landing techniques, boat control and positioning in the soup zone (the area between the outer waves and the beach) , interpreting a surf forecast and introduce kayak surfing.

Level a roll is not needed Advanced Beginner - Intermediate

Min 2 and max 3 participants

Location:  North Oregon Coast - Oceanside Beach
